Mom-owned Businesses We Love >> ByRoeline

We are very excited to start our first of many blog-interviews with some amazing women behind the local mom-owned businesses you & I adore. The first is very special to MonaLisa Mamas, as ByRoeline exclusively designed and screen-printed (by hand!) MLM’s very first Baby Onesies. Read all about our interview with Roeline from ByRoeline&Co.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself and what motivated and inspired you to start ByRoeline

About 3 years ago I quit my corporate job and took a mini sabatical. I have always know that I will own an online shop, but never knew exactly what products I will be selling. We moved to Knysna shortly thereafter and I just started screenprinting baby products for friends and later realized but “hey” people are actually interested in paying for these products so why not offer these products to the public.

  • What type of products do you sell?

Online I sell Baby and kids clothing items which we make from scratch. And then to a few shops I manufacture and supply some decor items as well.

  • What steps did you take to get things going in the beginning?

I dabbled a bit with short courses in web development during my sabbatical and used that knowledge to set up a basic free online shop version. This was just to see if there was any interest and if this was a viable business idea.

  • How has being a Mom changed the way you think about your business?

Work hard, play hard. So whenever I have a few minutes to myself I go all out and bang out new business ideas, work on products, emails etc.  Basically utilizing every single moment I have to get the most out of it. Whether it is cuddling with my boy Zion or doing a few business tasks.

  • Tell us about how baby Zion has inspired you.

Wow, there are so many things! But at the moment he is my inspiration for my winter range. Items that are cute but still practical.

  • Tips on keeping the spark alive in your marriage with your own business and baby?

Make time to check in with one another and whatever gets said between 12pm and 6am does not count.

  • What types of marketing strategies have worked best for you?

Instagram is my jam. Most of my business comes from my engagement and my Instagram account.

  • Do you prefer to shop local, small businesses because you are a local, small business, or does it depend?

It really does depend. Being a homemaker I have to keep our budget in mind, and if I find an item is less expensive but still the same quality with a retail store I will rather buy that item. But then again we have so many great unique local businesses which I love to support.

  • Who are 3 of your Mom-run Business you love?

MonaLisa Mamas – for realz! Their wrap has saved my life. Anneen Henze Collection for Maternity wear, and then Lonzi and Bean maternity.

  • What are you currently working on?

I am working with a few boutiques on collaborations where I make products exclusively for them and then I am also planning my 2018 Winter Collection.

  • Where do you see ByRoeline&Co in 5 years?

I would like to have agents who sell my products and have little mom get togethers that support, inspire and motivate moms.

  • Do you have any advice for other moms who run their own business?

Not yet, I am still figuring it out. But if I had to say something – Coffee and Jesus.

The most courageous thing I’ve ever done as an entrepreneur is…enabling other people to generate an income by teaching them my screen-printing skills.

If I could go back in time to when I started by business, I would tell myself…take more risks and put yourself out there. Failure isn’t lethal.

My favourite business tool/resource/book/podcast is…The Lean Startup and Jasmine Star.

My favourite quote is…let your faith be bigger than your fear.

My greatest fear is..snakes.

Myself in one word…stubborn.

Something few people know about me is…I used to participate in singing competitions.

My very first job was…waitressing at Burger Fair.

My  biggest pet peeve is…when people are late.

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be…Steve Jobs
