Mom-owned Businesses We Love >> Tiny Necessities

You will absolutely go goo-goo eyes over this Mom-owned Business as much as we did. And if you didn’t know too much about them before, then you will absolutely thank us now. They are amazing.  So much love and attention goes into every little detail of every piece of clothing. Special occasion? You’ve come to the right place. Introducing: Tiny Necessities.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and what motivated and inspired you to start Tiny Necessities.

Growing up, I had two major influences in my life – My Father was, and still is an Entrepreneur. I learned most of my business skills from him and I often still find myself asking him for advice when it comes to business decisions. My Mother is a very strong woman and she taught myself and my two sisters to be independent. I have always been drawn to the fashion industry – but it was only when I became a mother that I realised where I wanted to invest my design skills and passion for clothing and textiles in. My two little ones are the oxygen of Tiny Necessities.

2. What type of products do you sell?

We design and manufacture unique children’s clothing and specialise in special occasional wear and Christening Wear for little ones.

3. What steps did you take to get things going in the beginning?

I did my homework pretty well testing out what my clients wanted and what not. And even though the recipe didn’t quite work right from the start, I can honestly say that Tiny Necessities has now established a distinctive platform. I have had my fair share of hiccups this last 3 years. But learning from those hiccups and trying to improve is what makes the difference rather than throwing in the towel.

4. How has being a Mom changed the way you think about your business?

My Family always comes first. I will always get the job done one way or the other, but if I’m not answering my emails or my phone calls I’m most probably playing with my kids or helping with homework.

5. Tell us about how your children have inspired you.

My little girl will draw me pictures of the dresses she wants and exactly in what colour it should be – her dolls have outfits too – haha. I can’t sell something to another mom without testing out our garments on my own children first.

6. How do you balance your work/home life, or is there even such a thing?

It really gets crazy sometimes. I only have until 1pm to finish all my work and despatch orders as this is when I need to fetch my children from school and give them my undivided attention. But I have restricted myself to business hours. It sounds silly but I really do get the odd 10pm whatsapp for an urgent order.

7. What types of marketing strategies have worked best for you?

Professional Photography and Social Media is my best friend!

8. How long did it take for your business to be profitable?

A very testing 3 years.

9. Who are 3 of your own Mom-run Business you love?

I LOVE Kikki & Franki, Lu-May and Blanque Photography.

10. What are you currently working on?

Our new special occasion range

11. Where do you see Tiny Necessities in 5 years?

WOW – I hope to see the range in major retailers.

12. Since you’ve been through it, what would you tell someone starting out?

Don’t be fooled by the glamour, it takes hard work, sweat and tears to make it work. It’s very rewarding, so stay focused on your goals and believe in yourself and your brand.

The most courageous thing I’ve ever done as an entrepreneur is… Admitting to making mistakes and taking responsibility thereof. We are all just humans here, how can we learn if we don’t make mistakes?

If I could go back in time to when I started by business, I would tell myself… The best is yet to come!

My favourite business tool/resource/book/podcast is… My Husband J

My favourite quote is… He who is within me, is Greater than he who is in the world.

My greatest fear is… Losing my loved ones

Myself in one word… Visionary

Something few people know about me is… I’m a real Foody!

My very job was… Graphic Design & Web Development (I still do this in between)

My biggest pet peeve is… Self-pity

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be… My Husband
